One of the biggest crowd-pullers of the World Championships and an always tense Nordic derby was played on the very first day of the WFC already. The group A game, in which Sweden faced Finland, ended in an unexpectedly clear win by the reigning world champions from Sweden. After an unconvincing first period they led the game into an easy 8:2 win.

Due to health complications of one of the Czech referees it was decided that they will not be refereeing today's game between Switzerland and Latvia. They will be replaced by the Finnish duo Tom Kirjonen and Jyrki Sirkka.

The match between Australia and Hungary was a real drama. The Australians entered the game with greater determination and from the very beginning they were more productive. But the last period witnessed an attempted turnover with the Hungarians scoring a few quick goals and thus putting the Australian victory into jeopardy.  However, they didn't have enough time to tie the game, which ended in an Australian victory by 10:7.

Poland defeated Russia by 6:3 in a group A game. But for two periods the Poles were struggling with finishing and decided the game during the third period only. They played a total of eight power plays but converted only two of them. Quite the opposite, the Russians were causing them significant trouble in penalty killing situations and Maria Okulova even managed to score two shorthanded goals. But in the final period the Poles gained control of the game and recorded their first victory.

The Russian women's national team are a clear proof of the fact that two years are a really long period and many things can change. While at the previous World Championships in St. Gallen the relentless Russians had only fourteen players and one goalie in their squad, after significant changes in the management of the Russian Floorball Federation the situation started to turn. The new national team coach Anatoly Bykov brings twenty players to the Czech Republic and the core of the team is formed by the players of Nauka-Trevelstroy, winners of the Women's EuroFloorball Cup.

The first match of the Women's World Championships in Brno was played by the national teams of Japan and Denmark. Not only did they start the entire Championships, but also the battles in group D. The spectators saw an interesting game with quite a few goals from the very beginning. But from the second period the Danes took over the activity and with their accurate and creative play they led the game to a victorious end. They kept increasing their lead and the final score 11:2 speaks for itself.
