WFC 2013

30 November 2013

It wouldn't be Sweden if they didn't surprise with something. While their biggest opponents play it safe and their squads are not surprising, the Swedish coach Söderström didn't include the 21-year-old defender Emelie Wibron into his roster of twenty players and his decision has raised eyebrows. And then, with sang-froid, he announced that his team will come to defend the title of world champions to Brno and Ostrava.

team SWEDENWibron without the Championships? Hardly anyone expected that. But actually the coach Carl Söderström, who took over the Swedish women's national team after the previous WFC from Jan Erik Vaara, only continued in the trend his predecessor introduced. Two years ago Vaara didn't call up the legendary Hermine Dahlerus for the World Championships and the floorball world stood in awe. Dahlerus was something like a permanent inventory; before then she hadn't missed one single WFC! And Carl Söderström went even further and decided not to call up Emelie Wibron, one of the world's best defenders and an all-star team member from the previous Championships in St. Gallen, for this year's WFC. The coach commented on his decision in an interview for innebandymagazinet.se, saying: “Emelie is now on 70–80 % of her previous performances. And that's not enough. At the moment we have players who are better prepared.” Wibron herself couldn't conceal her deep disappointment, but she admitted that her form is not ideal, although probably sufficient for the Championships. The winner of five medals from five World Championships most likely paid for the change of environment after moving from IKSU to Pixbo Wallenstam.

After the previous World Championships the team captain Karolina Widar retired from the national team. The new captain of this year's selection will be the 29-year-old Josefina Eiremo, who already played at two World Championships. The coach also had to solve the riddle regarding goalies, because the long-time key player Hanna Pettersson also announced retirement and ended her career. Team Sweden will bring Emelie Frisk and Malin Marklund for the tournament, with only the former having some experience with World Championships. But with University Championships only...

A balanced squad will come to the Czech Republic, with the biggest stars being undoubtedly Emelie Lindström, Cassandra Edberg, or Therese Karlsson. Söderström's roster comprises eight debutants, including the 24-year-old Louise Wickström, who is considered a joker in the Swedish team.
