WFC 2013

05 December 2013

When you say Latvian floorball, the first thing that comes to your mind is the name Baiba Juruša. This regular WFC participant and the most experienced Latvian floorball player was yet again selected by the coach Janis Freivalds into his squad for the Women's World Floorball Championships held in Brno and Ostrava. What players is the unpredictable Team Latvia going to bring into the battle for medals?

The Latvians have been regular participants in the World Championships since their beginning, i.e. since 1997. Their best result at World Championships dates back to 2007 when they finished 4th in Frederikshaven, Denmark. At the previous Championships two years ago they finished “only” sixth after losing to Norway in the 5th-place game. All these historical milestones of Latvian women's floorball are lined with the career of one Latvian floorball enthusiast. Her name is Baiba Juruša and at the age of thirty she is going to play at her ninth World Championships.

The Latvian head coach Janis Freivalds has a player with an honourable series in his team. In the very first Latvian game in the tournament, on 7th December against Switzerland, Juruša will break yet another record. Besides having the most WFC participations she will also hold the record for the most games played.

The Latvian women's national team is actually quite a riddle for their opponents in group B. Despite the Czechs, the Swiss, as well as the Norwegians played several matches in the past against Latvia, they don't know much about their current playing style. This is because the Latvians didn't play a single international game in 2012. Only early in 2013 they played the World Championships qualification tournament, which they won without losing a game.

There are no doubts about the progress of Latvian floorball – three national team players play in the Swiss top league. And the squad also includes many players from the club Rubene, who, therefore, have extensive experience from tough matches in the Champions Cup or EuroFloorball Cup…
