WFC 2013

07 December 2013

The message from the game between Switzerland and Latvia is clear. The players from the Baltic country have to be taken into account. Although the evening game in group B ended with a decisive Swiss win by 6:1, the Latvians showed a very promising performance and had a good start into the Championships.

In the last game of the first day of the Women's World Floorball Championships held in Brno and Ostrava the favourites from Switzerland encountered Team Latvia. And although the Swiss players gave the ball away to their opponents only sporadically, whenever this happened the Latvians posed a danger. Still it was the Switzerland who went into the lead with a hard shot by Michelle Wiki.

In spite of this, Janis Freivalds' team was apparently very well prepared for their opponents, which helped the Latvians to stay within range during the first period. The deliberately playing Swiss team often closed the active Latvians on their half and patiently waited for a space to score. Halfway through the game the Swiss goalie, Helen Bircher, didn't have much work and even started clapping into the rhythm with the numerous Swiss fan club. In the meantime, her teammates Corin Rüttimann and again Michelle Wiki increased the lead to 3:0.

I was really surprised by how the Latvians played. They were really good. Especially their defence...,” Rüttimann spoke highly of her opponents (more here). In the final period, however, the Latvian defence was not so impenetrable anymore. Or maybe the Swiss players finally found a way to overcome it because they added three more goals. And the Swiss coach Sascha Brendler can be happy that the six goals were scored by five different players. On the other hand, the coach of Team Latvia will have something to think about because of his team's 16 shots only the one by Santa Torstere ended in the net. And with such effectiveness they will have a hard job tomorrow against Norway…
