09 December 2013

The Czech team thrashed Latvia 12:1 a finished on the second position in group B. The Czechs went into a quick lead with 56 seconds into the game thanks to Denisa Billá, who converted a penalty shot for playing in the goalkeeper area. The home team launched their scoring surge in the first period and scored seven goals into the Latvian net. The Czech players controlled the game in the remaining two periods as well and could thus enjoy the excellent atmosphere in the arena.

The home players were in pursuit of victory from the very start of the match. Already in the first period the Latvians played in their goalkeeper area and were penalized with a penalty shot. Denisa Billá converted it adeptly and sent her team into the lead. The Czechs virtually mopped the floor with their opponents in the first period. The second goal was added by Dominika Šteglová in the sixth minute and Gabriela Žůrková added the third one less than a minute later. It was her first goal at the World Championships.

The Czech players didn't ease up in their efforts and after goals by Urbánková, Hašová, Paulovičová and again Urbánková they were leading 7:0 after twenty minutes. Then the home team paused for a while and, on the other hand, the Latvians got themselves together a bit. In the middle period, Jana Vojáčková broke her bad luck in scoring, applied her strength in the crease and added the eighth Czech goal. And five minutes later Žůrková scored her second goal of the game.

The Czech goalie Kristýna Provázková was close to a shutout. But she was robbed of the clean sheet by her teammate Kristýna Jílková, whose attempted pass ended in her own net. But the Czechs took this moment with a smile on their face and in the third period they finished their opponents off. Urbánková completed a hat trick, Zuzana Halfarová scored her first WFC goal and the last Czech goal was added by Kristýna Jílková after a nice combination in a power play.

The Czech players, therefore, finished second in group B behind Switzerland and tomorrow they will be looking out for their quarterfinal opponent. Gabriela Žůrková showed great performance against Latvia, scored two goals and was involved in four goals overall. “I scored the goals thanks to the work of our entire line,” she commended her linemates' contribution. “The spectators in Ostrava can look forward to attractive floorball!” she invited fans to Ostrava where the Czech team will now move.
