WFC 2013

13 December 2013

Well, hardly anyone expected that. The Latvians, who haven't been showing their best performances at this year's World Championships, managed to move up a gear in the final ranking games. Today they scored nine times and outclassed Poland with a clean sheet.

Latvia fully used their day off on Thursday. The players from the Baltic country recharged their batteries and on Friday they used this energy to rout their Polish opponents. “It's great we managed to score nine goals against Poland. We also received some flurries here,” Luize Bilinska from Latvia said with joy (more here). On the other hand, the only Pole playing in the Swedish Elitserien, Malgorzata Pazio, had completely opposite feelings (more here): “This is how it ends when a half of the team wants to play, whereas the other forget themselves somewhere.”

The Polish coach Arkadiusz Pysz chose defensive tactics. But the Poles were static, while the Latvians kept passing the ball around and waited for their opportunity. They sent a total of twenty-four shots on the Polish goal, out of which nine ended in the net, despite Poland changed their goalies. Poland had the same number of shots, but none of them found the way behind the Latvian goalies Visnevska and Jekabsone, who recorded a joint shutout.

In the 5th place game on Sunday Latvia will meet the winner of the match between Norway and Germany. Poland will fight for the seventh place with the losing team.
